In 2005, Showalter became the first female chair of the American Comparative Literature Association, and she has served on the board of directors of the Modern Language Association and the National Coalition Against Censorship. Her father was born in the Bronx, and when she was five years old, the family moved to a two-bedroom apartment in the Bronx. After seven years in the Bronx, they moved to Mount Vernon, New York in the 1950s. Her mother, a high school Spanish teacher and avid reader, was also an important influence on her. Their conservative, middle-class, Jewish upbringing, instilled in her a love of classic literature and a political awareness. The family lived in New Rochelle, New York from 1960 to 1965 and then moved to Charleston, West Virginia in 1965, where her father taught at the local college.

Showalter graduated from Vassar College in 1963, majoring in creative writing and English. She received her M.A. in English from the University of Michigan in 1967. Her first marriage, to Robert Penn Warren, lasted from 1965 to 1975. She is the mother of two sons, Jonathan and Ben.

Showalter has written and edited numerous books and articles focused on a variety of subjects, from feminist literary criticism to fashion, sometimes sparking controversy, especially with her work on illnesses. Showalter has been a television critic for People magazine and a commentator on BBC radio and television. She is a recipient of the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism.
