Gerald Levert was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1966. He grew up in a musical family, as his father Eddie Levert and his uncles Walter and Eric formed the famous R&B group The O'Jays. Gerald started singing at an early age and joined his brother Sean and friend Marc Gordon to form the group LeVert in 1983. LeVert had several hits in the 1980s and 1990s, such as Casanova, Pop Pop Pop Goes My Mind, and Baby I'm Ready.
Gerald also pursued a solo career and released his debut album Private Line in 1991. The album spawned the hit singles Private Line, School Me, and Baby Hold On to Me, a duet with his father Eddie. Gerald continued to release solo albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s, such as Groove On, Love & Consequences, G, and Do I Speak for the World. He also collaborated with other artists such as Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill (forming the supergroup LSG), Patti LaBelle, Vanessa Williams, Yolanda Adams, and Teena Marie.
